In the Tidal Waters collection Teodora explores our relationship with the sea and its rhythms. “I began to research the tides of Venice, fascinated by how they affect and define the city. I later expanded to other areas, exploring the idea of the cycle they follow, their movements at times peaceful, and other times forceful and dangerous, and how this affects the lives of people living nearby. Our relationship with the sea is similar, in that it provides so much to us, from nourishment, sea-faring trades, and a sense of peace to the other side in that the sea can be forceful, dangerous, destructive, powerful, and leave us with a sense of awe or even fear. The dichotomy of these rhythms is also a metaphor for so much of how we experience life. These thoughts and images play in my mind as I paint.” The processes she uses include: layering, movement, subtractive, expressive gestural, and watery soak-stain techniques.
